Challenges in the Water Sector

Decentralized facility structures

Water networks, reservoirs, treatment plants, pumping stations – spread across many sites, often with legacy technology and insufficient security integration.

Hybrid threats

Attacks range from drone flights and perimeter intrusions to targeted cyberattacks on process control and remote systems.

Limited resources and responsibilities

Technical staff are scarce, and security is often not a primary responsibility. Binding procedures and backups for key roles are frequently lacking.

Increasing regulatory pressure

Operators above certain thresholds are KRITIS-liable under § 8a BSIG. With the new NIS2UmsuCG, mid-sized operators will also be covered from 2025 onward.
